An Italian Housing Segregation Story

At least 11 of Italy’s informal settlements, which have never been systematically surveyed, have existed for more than 20 years. Among them is the “ex Pista” in Apulia, which hosts up to 2,000 people, mainly male farmworkers from Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, often undocumented and exposed to labor exploitation. Its development around public reception facilities that have operated in the area since 1999, its distance from inhabited centers and the absence of any services reflect governmental choices in managing migration emergencies that conflict with the European principle of non-segregation. Beyond documenting the state of the place, the project also aims to bear witness to the work of governmental and non-governmental organizations that, through healthcare, literacy, training programs, the provision of safe and decent housing and regular employment contracts, try to promote integration with the surrounding social fabric.
